Q1. What is Datong Chinese School?

Datong Chinese School is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit community language school. It is registered with the NSW Department of Education Community Language School Program and receives government funding.

Datong Chinese School was founded in 1992 by the Chinese-English Bilingual Society of the University of Sydney.

Datong Chinese School enrols students from a range of Chinese-language backgrounds. In the school, Chinese classes are available from Early Years through to Level 12.

No particular family background is required. The school provides Chinese learning for students with different language backgrounds.

Q9. What textbook does Datong Chinese School use?

Datong Chinese School uses Chinese《中文》as a core resource, a textbook series published by Jinan University 暨南大学 of China suitable for students learning Chinese overseas. The “levels” of the Datong program are based on the language learning progression of the textbook. The school and teachers also develop their own resources.

Yes. HSC Chinese is one of Datong's programs. Chinese Continuers and Extension, Chinese in Context and Chinese and Literature are all available for Datong students.

Yes. Datong offers the HSK Chinese program. The availability varies from one campus to another.

Datong operates a four-term program in a school year. The dates and number of teaching weeks may different from term to term. Parents can refer to the current calendar for exact dates.

Q18. How much are the fees?

The Chinese lesson fee can be different from weekend and after school programs, and changes slightly depending on the number of weeks in a term. The fee also varies from one afterschool campus to another. The fee can be paid weekly, or paid by a school term with a discount.  

For the weekend class, the standard Chinese lesson fee is $22 per lesson, $190 for a 10-week term or $170 for a 9-week term. For the afterschool class, the standard lesson fee is from $22-$28 per lesson, $220-$250 for a 10-week term or $200-225 for a 9-week term.

Q19. Can I pay for individual lessons?

Yes. The school currently allows payment by individual lesson or by term, with term-payment discounts available for some classes.

Yes. The textbook and workbook fee is $20 for the whole year, payable at the beginning of the school year or when a student enrols.
